"Filmgoers are not often aware of how much they owe film importers.  It cannot be seriously questioned that the best films of the post-war years have come from abroad, and many of the better ones have not made money in this country; it is due to the importers' taste and initiative that we have seen these pictures.  They are of course businessmen, not philanthropists; they have -- all of them -- imported inferior pictures and obvious trash.  Also, it would be easy to list 50 foreign films of the last 10 years that were interestingly reviewed abroad and have never been shown here at all.  But, after all these stipulations, the debt remains, and proportionately, to no firm more than to Janus Films." -- Stanley Kauffman, The World Of Film
