Fifty Years of Janus Films
October 25 - November 23, 2006

The Brattle Theatre is delighted to present a program of foreign masterworks during the months of October and November to commemorate Janus Films' 50th Anniversary. Founded in 1956, Janus served as a landmark film distribution company that championed the stateside exhibition of international cinema. Janus's cofounder Bryant Haliday also oversaw the mid 1950s transformation of the Brattle into a film exhibition space. This program is a celebration of both international cinema and the Brattle’s own rich, programming history.

Our Janus series enables us to present a program of essential cinematic masterworks. With this series we are allowing our audience to revisit old favorites while enabling a new generation to be introduced to what are arguably some of the most important films of all time.  Our Janus program also marks the end of the Preserve the Brattle Legacy Campaign. We feel there is no better way to celebrate everything the Brattle stands for and everything that we have been working to preserve.

This series includes works by some of the greatest filmmakers of all time, including Ingmar Bergman, François Truffaut, Akira Kurosawa and Jean Renoir. We will be brining you a combination of classic favorites like "The 400 Blows" and rarer treats such as the early Bergman masterpiece, "Monika".
