Brattle devotion starts young!

This great photo was sent in by a Brattle member/donor/Watch-a-thon participant who recently had her first child. As you can see, she is ensuring that her love of the Brattle is being passed on to the next generation.

Thanks Stef!

IFFB kicks off at the Brattle… right now!

I am listening to Ned introduce the first film screening at the Brattle as part of this year’s Independent Film Festival of Boston. Ned and I, well all of us here at the Brattle, are big festival fans. They are incredibly important to the film industry by presenting films that may not be shown during a theatrical release, getting the filmgoing audience excited about seeing movies that they don’t know much about, and generally upping the good movie vibe that is so important to the exhibition industry.

Not only do we host festivals here at the Brattle but Ned and I try to attend a number of festivals throughout the year. I also work two film festivals each year. I have an uncanny love for print traffic—the effort involved in getting all of the films for a festival shipped in and out. I got the taste for it when I was Operations Manager here at the Brattle in the 90s and have kept working for festivals to get a small taste a couple times of year.

Since year two of IFFB I have been their print trafficker. (Gabe our current Operations Manager works with me on this since I am also juggling it with my full-time job at the Brattle.) Ned volunteers for the festival as house manager at the Brattle during the festival, doing the introductions, helping incorporate their ticketing system into our box office, and all of the other logistical nuances involved with hosting the festival.

This year my goal is to try to see some movies during the festival in addition to just working it. I am planning on seeing THE PARKING LOT MOVIE later on tonight, PHILLIP THE FOSSIL, and hopefully CONVENTION and STRANGE POWERS on Sunday.

I will see you all in Harvard Square or Davis as I move prints and watch movies. I will try to grab some behind the screen shots in my travels as well.

Have a great festival week!

Watchathon fundraising open until their finish line party party on 12/15 but movie watching closed

It has been an exciting month of avid movie watching for our four Watchathon participants. I am waiting to get their final tally of movies watched but wanted to let you know that our reigning Watchathon champion, Brian Paik, succeeded in watching 31 movies in 30 days!

All of the participants are very close to making their fundraising goal as you can see from the great little widgets below. These avid film fans have successfully raised thousands of dollars for the Brattle Annual Fund while doing what they love, watching movies! Anyone interested in sponsoring one of them, and making sure that they make their goals, can do so by clicking on one of the links below.

Ivy’s Toronto FF catch up

I am not dead. It has been hard to catch up on work and I have had a hard time getting back to the blog to catch up on my film write ups. But I am going to see if I can catch up this week. So where did I leave off?

Oh right, after day three. Wow! Five more days to go. Well here is day 4 at least.

Day 4 – Disenfranchisement was the theme* for the day. Everything seemed to be focused on people living outside of society. Maybe this doesn’t really work for The Loved Ones, the midnight, but then killers always live outside of society, so maybe it does.

*A theme isn’t necessary but they are amusing when they sort of appear on their own.

Ivy’s final movie tally

I did warn you what would happen when I started attending the midnight movies. It’s hard to find any time to write when you are in movies from 9:30 AM until 3 AM! (with small breaks of course, I’m not completely insane) I have no idea how the film writers do it!

So this is the final tally of films that I saw. For the most part they were all great with only a couple of exceptions.

  1. Antichrist – amazing!
  2. Backyard – really good
  3. Nymph – good, liked his other films better
  4. L’Enfer de Henri-Georges Cluzot – amazing!
  5. Leslie, My Name is Evil – good and fun
  6. My Tehran for Sale – amazing!
  7. Fish Tank – good
  8. I am Not Your Friend – great
  9. Mall Girls – good
  10. Face – great
  11. Rabia – really good
  12. Reel Injun – really good
  13. A Brand New Life – great
  14. Airdoll – great
  15. The Loved Ones – really good
  16. Youth in Revolt – really good
  17. Colony – great
  18. Bitch Slap – bad
  19. Vision – pretty, but not for me
  20. My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done – interesting, have to see it again
  21. Moloch Tropical – interesting but but not for me
  22. She, A Chinese – great
  23. White Material – really good
  24. The Bad Detective – great
  25. Valhalla Rising – really good

I am bleary-eyed and exhausted. Can’t wait to be home. I will write more on my festival experiences and thoughts through the weekend.
