A remarkable new documentary by Jehane Noujaim (Control, THE SQUARE takes us inside the ongoing Egyptian Revolution. From the 2011 overthrow of a 30 year dictator, through military rule, and culminating with the forced military removal of the Muslim Brotherhood president in the summer of 2013, we follow a group of Egyptian activists as they battle leaders and regimes, and risk their lives to build a new society of conscience.

THE SQUARE is an immersive experience, transporting the viewer deep into the intense emotional drama and personal stories behind the news. It is the inspirational story of young people claiming their rights, struggling through multiple forces, in the fight to create a society of conscience.

★★★½ “What does a revolution feel like from the inside? I’m not sure we’ll ever get closer than ‘The Square.’” —Ty Burr, The Boston Globe

Grade: A “Like lightning in a bottle.” —James Verniere, The Boston Herald

★★★★ “An exhilarating portrait of Egyptian politics.” —Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

“‘The Square’ is inner-world-shaking.” —David Edelstein, New York Magazine

“In Jehane Noujaim’s documentary The Square, the Egyptian revolution is finally explained in a clear, wonderfully intimate and non-condescending way…a documentary we can all go back to again and again to better understand, empathize and identify with our Egyptian brothers and sisters.” —E. Nina Rothe, The Huffington Post

“Even though THE SQUARE depicts widely covered recent events, it still feels like a revelation. This is partly because of the immediacy of Ms. Noujaim’s approach, which often puts the viewer in the midst of chaos as it unfolds. You may know what is coming … but you witness it all in a state of suspense and agitation. At the end, you may also understand it better than you did before. This fearless exercise in political reportage is also a formidable, if necessarily raw, work of political thought.” – A.O. Scott, The New York Times

“As thrilling and urgent as a film can be, this documentary crackles with the velocity of history as it happens.” —Steve Dollar, The Wall Street Journal

“Fulfilling the highest calling of documentary films, Jehane Noujaim’s The Squarecaptures the immediacy and intensity of the Egyptian revolution from the inside as it’s happening. A daring and provocative piece of work” —James Greenberg, The Hollywood Reporter
