Angst essen Seele auf (1974) dir Rainer Werner Fassbinder w/ Brigitte Mira, El Hedi ben Salem [93 min; 35mm; In German with English subtitles]
In homage to his cinematic idol, director Douglas Sirk, Fassbinder adapted Sirk’s masterpiece All That Heaven Allows by widening the age gap and tapping into racial tensions in German culture. A sexagenarian widow, Emmi, meets Ali, a younger Moroccan at a local bar, and much to their own surprise the two fall in love, causing hostility among their family, friends, and community. Employing the potency of melodrama, Fassbinder weaves a tender and poignant tale of heartbreak and love.
