Acclaimed director Thom Andersen’s epic video essay on the use and abuse of Los Angeles in Hollywood films celebrates its tenth anniversary with a high definition facelift. Andersen uses more than 300 clips to illustrate his narration about the geography and architecture of the most famous cinematic city in the world. The Brattle is thrilled to once again present this groundbreaking work, a treasure trove for film lovers of all kinds.

Thom Andersen is a filmmaker, critic, and teacher, and was programmer at the LA Filmforum in the late 1990s. Anderson currently teaches film theory and history at the California Institute of the Arts. LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF won the National Film Board Award for Best Documentary at the 2003 Vancouver International Film Festival, was voted best documentary of 2004 by the Village Voice Critic’s Poll, and was voted one of the Top Ten Films of the Decade by critics at Cinema Scope.
