(1968) dir Roman Polanski w/Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer [136 min; DCP]
Castle mortgaged his house to buy the rights to Ira Levin’s sensational novel before it was published, and planned to direct it himself as one last crack at a prestige picture. Unfortunately, to cover production costs he had to make a deal with Paramount who insisted on hiring a more, well, prestigious director. Despite his disappointment, we can only hope that Castle was pleased with the finished project as it remains one of the most well-known and accomplished horror films of all time.
