The Duke of Burgundy poster(2014) dir Peter Strickland w/Sidse Babett Knudsen, Chiara D’Anna [101 min; DCP]
Two women embark upon a unique relationship in a strange hermetic world – perhaps an alternate reality – where there are no men. Cynthia (Knudsen) is an amateur entomologist who specializes in moths and butterflies. Her lover Evelyn (D’Anna) is a submissive who puts unusual demands upon their relationship. Though Cynthia longs for a more conventional union, her love for Evelyn leads her to ever more extreme ends to satisfy. This may sound like the setup for a gauzy, soft-core porn film, but director Peter Strickland (Berberian Sound Studio) has actually created a remarkable, dreamlike, and often humorous, examination of relationships in general and specifically those that endure but threaten to become stale. The performances from Knudsen and D’Anna never feel anything less than authentic despite their stylized nature, and the gorgeous art direction and cinematography add to the seductive qualities of the film.

★★★½ “In a hermetically sealed universe that seems like an ‘Emmanuelle’ sequel dreamed up by Luis Buñuel and David Lynch, Cynthia (Sidse Babett Knudsen), and Evelyn (Chiara D’Anna), play games of power and submission… Sexy stuff. In the deepest sense.” – Peter Keough, Boston Globe

Grade A “Fifty Shades of What? See the S&M Romance ‘The Duke of Burgundy’ Instead!” – Eric Kohn, Indiewire

“Visually ravishing, emotionally wise, and kinky as a coiled rope.” – Leslie Felperin, The Hollywood Reporter

★★★★☆ “Filthy and fraught with genuine emotion.” – Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian

“A work of immense and intense emotional vigor, sprinkled with fun-loving traits and intellectually stimulating prowess, ‘The Duke of Burgundy’ is the stuff dreams are made of.” – Nikola Grozdanovic, The Playlist

“By turns kinky, dryly comic, and compellingly surreal, and boasting gorgeous, gothic cinematography and an enveloping score by orchestral pop duo Cat’s Eyes, THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY is — like Strickland’s previous work — a richly immersive sensory experience.” – Toronto International Film Festival

“Before you know anything, know this: Peter Strickland’s The Duke of Burgundy is a masterpiece.” – Rich Juzwiak, Defamer
