(2006) dir David Lynch w/Laura Dern, Justin Theroux, Jeremy Irons, Harry Dean Stanton, Diane Ladd, Grace Zabriskie, Scott Coffey [180 min; Digital]
Lynch’s periodic muse, Laura Dern (Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart) stars as Nikki, a Hollywood actress who has just accepted a great role despite an ominous visit by a neighbor (Zabriskie). As the filming of the movie within the movie unfolds, Nikki and her leading man Devon (Theroux) find themselves not only inhabiting their characters but being inhabited by them. Soon, the line between film and reality is completely erased and the question of Nikki’s true identity comes to the fore.

“You could say, I suppose, that INLAND EMPIRE is about an actress in a Hollywood film that’s been cursed by Gypsies. But that’s like saying Ulysses is a story about a guy who sells newspaper ads.” – Andrew O’Hehir, Salon

“[Laura Dern] triumphs in the role of a lifetime. Several lifetimes, in fact, as her character metamorphoses with every story within a story and dream within a dream.” – Peter Keough, The Boston Phoenix

“★★★★!” – Ty Burr, The Boston Globe
