The 21st Annual!

The Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film highlights its commitment to independent and foreign film in style, holding its CHLOTRUDIS AWARDS ceremony in early spring at the historic Brattle Theatre. The public is invited to join Chlotrudis members, nominees and special guests in the celebration.

Filmmaker Signe Baumane will be in attendance to accept a special award from Chlotrudis in celebration of her impressive and broad-ranging career. Born in Latvia, Signe Baumane is an animator, writer, fine artist and illustrator now living and working in New York City. Having made several successful short films, including NATASHA and WOMAN, both Chlotrudis Short Film Festival finalists, this past year saw the debut of Baumane’s first full-length animated feature, ROCKS IN MY POCKETS. The film was selected as Latvia’s entry for the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Film category, and is also nominated in the Chlotrudis Awards’ Buried Treasure category.

Ms. Baumane began her career as an animator in Latvia, moving to New York in the mid-90’s to work with legendary film animator Bill Plympton as cel painter and color stylist, and over the years she has been a frequent collaborator on a number of his films. With her own films, Baumane has won a cult reputation and critical acclaim for her frank takes on sex, pregnancy and dentistry, all done in a distinctive hand drawn style.
