BUFF logoJill is not doing very well these days. Coping with unemployment and acclimating to her new life in Los Angeles, she clings to her sexy model roommate Jennifer — and a frightening carb habit — in an attempt to find some semblance of grounding. Instead, she finds a deepening well of jealousy and rage within, towards herself and everyone around her.

A hotshot on the LA fashion scene, Jennifer’s patience with Jill’s mopey freeloading is beginning to wane, as brutal honesty supplants friendly encouragement. Promises are flippantly made and broken as Jennifer binges, purges, and fucks her way through a week in an attempt to fill her own life’s void. Assimilating the bulimic habit, learned from her roommate and the culture in which they live, Jill’s obsession with her weight transmogrifies into a desire to control Jennifer’s body. If Jill can’t be Jennifer, then she must imprison and destroy her.

Director Patrick Kennelly’s phantasmagoric feature debut presents a brutal, complex, and disturbingly authentic representation of the psychosomatic horror surrounding eating disorders. With shades of Polanski, Aronofsky, and Żuławski, Excess Flesh breaks new ground in the exploration of body image/horror, and ultimately of the horrific prison that is the mind/body itself.
