THE WORLD OF KANAKO / 渇き / Japan, 118 min, 2014

BUFF logoEstranged from his family, Akikazu Fujishima is not the model man he wishes himself to be. After a long career hitting the streets as a gritty detective, he hits the bottle hard, and his wife’s lover harder, leaving in his destructive wake broken glass, teeth, hearts, and dreams — mostly his own.

Prone to violent outbursts, years of navigating the criminal underworld have left their indelible mark on his psyche. Absorbed in his own failings and clinging to false memories of an idyllic, long-gone past, Fujishima sees an opportunity to restore himself as man of the house when his wife calls to tell him their teenage daughter, Kanako, has gone missing.

A detective at his core, Fujishima begins to investigate Kanako’s rich, private world — her school, her friends, the places she inhabits — soon discovering she’s far from the standard of angelic perfection he’s been holding her to. To his grave surprise, the search for Kanako brings him back to the dark places from which he tried to escape as he ascertains who — and what — his daughter really is and why she’s disappeared. Traversing fetid sewers, bombastic underground raves, and the high school cafeteria, Fujishima’s resolve to find his daughter grows with baneful intensity.

Director Tetsuya Nakashima has dragged audiences — by the throat — into some of the darkest depths committed to celluloid with films like Confessions and Memories of Matsuko; his latest effort depicts collisions of vile humanity and bubble-techno-chipwave J-pop to profoundly beautiful effect, elevating him instantly to the ranks of auteurs Sion Sono and Takashi Miike.

Combining the sensibilities of a 70’s exploitation film with the modern sheen of a violent psychological thriller, The World of Kanako takes you on a horrific, oft hilarious ride through candy-colored hell. Think Get Carter & Ichi the Killer with an Urbangarde tempo.

The deification of youthful feminine beauty explodes into candy-coated overload, and overdrive, in this pastiche of 21st century hell. And fashion.
