BUFF logoA paean to The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist, Ted Geoghegan’s directorial debut is old school horror bathed in the harvest gold and avocado—and blood, of course. We Are Still Here is an engaging throwback to the Lovecraftian fright fests of the late 70s and early 80s, where a family’s love could persevere even when buying the wrong fucking house in one weird fucking town.

In an effort to start over after their only son’s accidental death, Paul (Andrew Sensenig, Upstream Color) and Anne (Barbara Crampton, Re-Animator) Sachetti move to a cold New England town where the people are even colder. Their cellar also seems to be occupied by the former owner who requires the sacrificial bloodletting of a family every 30 years.

There is also some indication that nothing good can possibly happen after drinking J&B.

All the retro tropes are in full force, and the cast of mostly-veteran horror actors are wholly game. ‘Friendly’ neighbor Dave (Monte Markham) sends chills with his spot-on creepy preacher vibe, and Larry Fessenden and the still-gorgeous Lisa Marie play the Schettis’ energy-sensing hippie pals who probably should have just said they were busy that weekend.

Geoghegan goes beyond B-movie mainstays, exploring the couple’s deeper despair and longing through lingering shots subtly anchored by a family photo sitting in the foreground. But technique and the human condition aside, We Are Still Here is a welcome blast from the past with the perfect balance of camp, gore, and vintage attire.

A suspenseful, super-natural thriller about a very bad day for one family.
