(2014) dir Lisandro Alonso w/Viggo Mortensen, Viibjørk Malling Agger [109 min; DCP; in Spanish and Danish with English subtitles]
An astonishingly beautiful and gripping film starring Viggo Mortensen, JAUJA begins its impressionistic journey at a remote outpost in Patagonia during the late 1800s. Captain Dinesen (Mortensen) has come from abroad with his fifteen-year-old daughter Ingeborg (Agger) to take an engineering job with the Argentine army. When Ingeborg disappears one night, Dinesen sets out into the bleak wilderness to track her down.

This newest film from Argentinian director Lisandro Alonso (Los Muertos, La Libertad) metes out its story in restrained, gorgeous frames. Dineson’s journey, though punctuated by wild moments of action, is a philosophical one that leads to a haunting and ambiguous conclusion.

(3½ of 4 stars) “Alonso sustains an atmosphere of otherworldly immanence in a vivid setting, with a style involving long takes with characters posed as if in tableaux vivants.” – Peter Keough, Boston Globe

★★★★★ “Part meditative, realist anti-western, part metaphysical, Tarkovsky-esque head-scratcher.” – Michelle Devereaux, The Skinny

“I never once doubted that I was in the hands of a master filmmaker.” – Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine/Vulture

“There’s so much to take in here that at times I almost felt as if I were absorbing it through my skin.” – Stephanie Zacharek, Village Voice

“A film to make you wonder.” – Alex Dudok de Wit, Time Out London

NYT Critics’ Pick “There is wit and mischief in the way Mr. Alonso plays with the relationship between what we see, what we don’t see and what we expect to see.” – A. O. Scott, New York Times

Brattle passes accepted.

Dear Brattle Friends,

You guys continue to humble and amaze us with your outpouring of support!

Thanks to you, we have now raised more than $35,000 from over 400 individual donors!

Thank you for helping to keep our staff paid and The Brattle alive during this scary time.

I hope that you are all feeling healthy.

As we remain closed, our preliminary goal is to raise four weeks of operating support, or $65,000, to ensure we can continue to pay all of our staff, and other overhead through April 7. As things develop, our timeline for being closed and fundraising goal may change, but our ultimate goal of re-opening The Brattle stays firm.

With your help, this goal will become a reality.

Stay healthy,

Ivy, Ned & The Brattle Theatre Team
