New Digital Restoration!

(1975) dir Albert & David Maysles w/”Little Edie” Bouvier Beale, Edith Bouvier Beale [100 min; DCP]
Albert and David Maysles, the legendary documentary filmmakers responsible for Gimme Shelter, ran across this eccentric pair of ladies (cousins of Jackie Kennedy) while working on another project. They were so captivated by the mother-daughter team that they dropped the planned film and settled in with them instead. What ensues is a sad and funny portrait of two women living in a decaying mansion with several cats, raccoons, and the regrets of what their lives might have been. The Maysles capture the bond the Beales share as they live in the wake of a former life of wealth and privilege. An impossibly intimate portrait, this 1976 documentary quickly became a cult classic and established Little Edie Beale as a fashion icon and philosopher queen. This new digital restoration from Janus Films was undertaken in collaboration with the Academy Film Archive at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This remarkable and beloved cult film now looks and sounds better than ever before.

“The ultimate mother-daughter documentary!” – Mark Feeney, Boston Globe

“Rarely have high spirits and theatrical energy seemed like such a tragic waste; an era and its myths seem to be dying on-screen in real time.” – Richard Brody, New Yorker

“Richly detailed and boundlessly evocative, even at its most claustrophobic.” – Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice
