THE CALL OF CTHULHU

(2005) dir Andrew Leman [47 min; Digital]
The Call of Cthulhu is H.P. Lovecraft’s most famous story – and the only one to feature the celebrated monster Cthulhu. In it, a man inherits his grandfather’s papers and becomes obsessed with investigating the mysterious and dangerous Cthulhu Cult. The famed story is brought richly to life in the style of a classic 1920s silent movie, with a haunting original symphonic score.

NIGHT GALLERY: PICKMAN’S MODEL

(1971) dir Jack Laird w/Bradford Dillman, Louise Sorel [25 min; 16mm]
One of the few serious attempts to bring Lovecraft to television screens came in Rod Serling’s post-Twilight Zone series, Night Gallery. Here, a young woman encounters a controversial artist whose hideous depictions of monsters have gotten him banned from society. He seems pleasant but, if as he claims, the best artists only paint what they see, then who or what is he using as a model!?
