Double Feature with THE GLASS KEY

(1990) dir Joel & Ethan Coen w/Gabriel Byrne, Marcia Gay Harden, John Turturro, Jon Polito, J.E. Freeman, Albert Finney, Steve Buscemi [115 min; DCP]
The Coen Brothers’ take on Dashiell Hammet’s classic crime novels Red Harvest and The Glass Key finds gangland lieutenant Tom Reagan (Byrne) stuck in numerous compromising situations as he tries to keep the peace between two rival gangs and locate some kind of moral bearing in a world where nothing is certain and no one is ever quite what they seem. MILLER’S CROSSING is, simultaneously, a masterful tribute to classic Hollywood gangster films, and fresh, thrilling, and stylistically bold in its own right.

“Joel and Ethan Coen’s amazing MILLER’S CROSSING, incredibly only their third feature film, is a beautiful and meticulous piece of craftsmanship that hearkens back to the glory days of Hollywood.”

Eric Shoag reviews the film for Brattle Film Notes
