BLOOD SIMPLE

Double Feature with THE GRIFTERS

(1984) dir Joel Coen w/John Getz, Frances McDormand, Dan Hedaya, M. Emmet Walsh [96 min; Digital]
The Coen Brothers’ debut film sees them paying homage to film noir while simultaneously upending one of its most treasured tropes: the femme fatale. In BLOOD SIMPLE, McDormand plays a woman in an unhappy marriage who falls into an affair with a bartender, only to have her husband hire a shady P.I. to catch her in the act. When, unbeknownst to her, the P.I. betrays and shoots her husband, a series of misunderstandings puts her life and liberty in danger.

“Black humor, abundant originality and a brilliant visual style make Joel Coen’s Blood Simple a directorial debut of extraordinary promise.” – Janet Maslin, New York Times

“As dark, ironic and fatalistically comic as modern film noir comes.” – Houston Chronicle

“BLOOD SIMPLE dares us to see stories for what they primarily are: vehicles for entertaining unusual situations from the points of view of interesting characters.” Selin Sevinç reviews BLOOD SIMPLE for Brattle Film Notes. Read More →

Dear Brattle Friends,

You guys continue to humble and amaze us with your outpouring of support!

Thanks to you, we have now raised more than $35,000 from over 400 individual donors!

Thank you for helping to keep our staff paid and The Brattle alive during this scary time.

I hope that you are all feeling healthy.

As we remain closed, our preliminary goal is to raise four weeks of operating support, or $65,000, to ensure we can continue to pay all of our staff, and other overhead through April 7. As things develop, our timeline for being closed and fundraising goal may change, but our ultimate goal of re-opening The Brattle stays firm.

With your help, this goal will become a reality.

Stay healthy,

Ivy, Ned & The Brattle Theatre Team
