October 2008. It’s been three years since Colleen was last home. A young Brooklynite novitiate at Sisters of Mercy, she’s weeks away from making her first vows. When an email from her mother arrives announcing that her older brother is home, she convinces the sister superior to let her borrow the convent’s car for five days and journeys home.

Upon her return to Asheville, NC, Colleen finds her old bedroom exactly how she left it: painted black, plastered with goth & metal posters, and headboard adorned with an inverted cross. Her parents are happy enough to see her, but unease and awkwardness pervades. Her brother, recently returned from the Iraq war, is holed up in the family guesthouse with a therapeutic drum kit and not up for visits, least of all from his own family.

Colleen and her brother’s loving bond is palpable, but takes patience and creative, oft-hilarious finesse to reconnect. Taking to heart sister superior’s wisdom, Collen uses her time home wisely to assess where she’s at, where she’s been, where she’s going, and whether this flawed, lovely clan can still have a place in her life. Tensions rise and fall with a little help from pot cupcakes, Halloween, and GWAR in Zach Clark’s exceptional fourth feature film.

Schmaltz-free and pathos-packed, Little Sister is a must-see sad comedy hell bent on soothing your inner goth girl. BUFF is thrilled to welcome Clark back a third time with his latest and greatest.
