Double Feature with BENT

(1999) dir Max Färberböck w/Maria Schrader, Juliane Köhler, Johanna Wokalek, Heike Makatsch [125 min; 16mm]
In 1943, while the Allies are bombing Berlin and the Gestapo is purging the capital of Jews, a dangerous love affair blossoms between two women. One of them, Lilly (Köhler), married and the mother of four sons, enjoys the privileges of her stature as an exemplar of Nazi motherhood. For her, this affair will be the most decisive experience of her life. For the other woman, Felice (Schrader), a Jewess and member of the underground, their love fills her with the hope that she will survive.

Co-presented with Wicked Queer: The Boston LGBT Film Festival and Boston Jewish Film Festival. Wicked Queer Film Festival returns March 30th to April 9th, 2017. Boston Jewish Film Festival takes place November 9–21.

“A sophisticated and beautiful feature debut from German television director Max Färberböck.” – Ella Taylor, L.A. Weekly

“This is more than a same-sex success, it’s a most affecting, most sensual on-screen love affair, period.” – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

“Schrader plays Felice with a kind of doomed and reckless bravery.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
