(2015) dir Agnieszka Smoczynska w/Marta Mazurek, Michalina Olszanska, Kinga Preis, Andrzej Konopka, Jakub Gierszal [92 min; DCP]
If you thought that La La Land needed 100% more sexy mermaids, this bold, genre-defying horror-musical mashup — the playful and confident debut of Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska — should be right up your alley. A pair of carnivorous mermaid sisters are drawn ashore in an alternate 1980s Poland to explore the wonders and temptations of life on land. Their tantalizing siren songs and otherworldly aura make them overnight sensations as nightclub singers in the half-glam, half-decrepit fantasy world of Smoczynska’s imagining. In a visceral twist on Hans Christian Andersen’s original Little Mermaid tale, one sister falls for a human, and as the bonds of sisterhood are tested, the lines between love and survival get blurred. A savage coming-of-age fairytale with a catchy new-wave soundtrack, lavishly grimy sets, and outrageous musical numbers, THE LURE explores its themes of sexuality, exploitation, and the compromises of adulthood with energy and originality. Opening Night, Boston Underground Film Festival 2016

“A genre-defying film that blends elements of musicals, horror, romance, and fantasy into a contemporary fairy tale that celebrates the animalistic, the feminine, and the intimate intersections between the two.” – Katie Rife, AV Club

“Holding it all together is an exploration – always intriguing if not always coherent – of the myths and puzzles of female sexuality.” – A. O. Scott, New York Times

“If you’re only going to see one sexed-up, cannibal-mermaid disco musical this year, make sure it’s ‘The Lure.'” – Sean Burns, The ARTery

“Unsettling and oneiric, The Lure is a film of black humor, grungy debauchery, and ravishingly surreal eroticism done with an idiom that blends high camp with unexpected pathos.” – Andrea Chase, Killer Movie Reviews

“Fantasy ladled over lunacy, The Lure is possibly the weirdest thing you’ll see this year.” – Trey Taylor, Dazed and Confused

The Lure somehow manages to seamlessly assemble a film equal parts hilarious, affecting, and grisly while trading and warping aesthetics and tones by the scene.” – Dominick Mayer, Consequence of Sound
