(2016) dir Albert Serra w/Jean-Pierre Léaud [115 min; DCP]
Versailles, August 1715. King Louis XIV (Jean-Pierre Léaud) feels pain in his leg. A serious fever erupts, which marks the beginning of the agony of the greatest King of France. Surrounded by a horde of doctors and his closest counselors who come in turns at his bedside sensing the impending power vacuum, the Sun King struggles to run the country from his bed.

Based on extensive medical records and the memoirs of the Duke of Saint-Simon and other courtiers, The Death of Louis XIV is a wry neoclassical chamber drama, a work of pure magic by Albert Serra, one of today’s most singular directors.

“Léaud’s finest onscreen creation since The 400 Blows.” – Eric Kohn, Indiewire

“Serra has crafted a ravishing, darkly witty evocation of 18th-century aristocracy and a neoclassical period piece as reminiscent of the historical films of Visconti and Rossellini as the modernist literary adaptations of Rohmer and Oliveira.” – Jordan Cronk, Film Comment

“A mesmerizing elegy.” – Manohla Dargis, New York Times

“Strange, haunting… and perhaps the most beautiful film seen in Cannes [2016].” – Jonathan Romney, Sight & Sound

NYT Critic’s Pick “‘The Death of Louis XIV’ is sober, meticulous and entirely convincing in its depiction of period and mortality.” – Glenn Kenny, New York Times

“A compact, improbably riveting viewing experience.” – Carson Lund, Slant

Dear Brattle Friends,

You guys continue to humble and amaze us with your outpouring of support!

Thanks to you, we have now raised more than $35,000 from over 400 individual donors!

Thank you for helping to keep our staff paid and The Brattle alive during this scary time.

I hope that you are all feeling healthy.

As we remain closed, our preliminary goal is to raise four weeks of operating support, or $65,000, to ensure we can continue to pay all of our staff, and other overhead through April 7. As things develop, our timeline for being closed and fundraising goal may change, but our ultimate goal of re-opening The Brattle stays firm.

With your help, this goal will become a reality.

Stay healthy,

Ivy, Ned & The Brattle Theatre Team
