Elements of Cinema!

25th Anniversary!

(1992) dir Clara Law w/Masatoshi Nagase, Pui-Wai Li, Choi Siu Wan, Maki Kiuchi [108 min; 35mm]
One of only a handful of female directors working in Hong Kong in the 1990s, Clara Law’s AUTUMN MOON reflects an interest in the psychological complexities of cross-cultural encounters and a cool exploration of cityscapes that evoke comparisons to both Jim Jarmusch and early Wong Kar-wai. A handsome young Japanese man, Tokio (Nagase), leaves his mundane job and travels to Hong Kong searching for an authentic food experience. In a chance encounter, he meets Hui (Li), a teenage schoolgirl living alone with her grandmother, and a sudden, deep friendship develops.

This special free screening is a part of our Elements of Cinema series and will be followed by a discussion with the audience.

“Delicate & witty… Visually magnificent.” – Stephen Holden, New York Times
