Double Feature with CLEO FROM 5 TO 7 (5:15, 9:00)

(1956) dir Agnès Varda w/Philippe Noiret, Silvia Monfort [80 min; DCP]
Varda’s film career began with this graceful, penetrating study of a marriage on the rocks, set against the backdrop of a small Mediterranean fishing village. Both a stylized depiction of the complicated relationship between a married couple and a documentary-like look at the daily struggles of the locals, Varda’s discursive, gorgeous debut was radical enough to later be considered one of the progenitors of the French New Wave.

“The film’s indebtedness to Italian neorealism of the ’40s is as unmistakable as its anticipation of the key works of European cinema that would follow.” – Andrew Chan, Slant

“A remarkably assured, gutsy and conceptually ostentatious piece of filmmaking.” – David Jenkins, Time Out
