TIME TO DIE/TIEMPO DE MORIR (1965) dir Arturo Ripstein w/Jorge Martinez de Hoyos, Marga López, Enrique Rocha, Alfredo Leal [90 min; DCP]
This classic Mexican neo-western, was the first realized screenplay of Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez and legendary Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes. Juan Sáyago (de Hoyos) returns to his hometown after serving 18 years in prison for the murder of Raúl Trueba. Although he killed in self-defense, rumors in town circulated during his absence speculating that the victim was killed in cold blood. Sáyago wants to rebuild the life he was denied with his old lover, Mariana Sampedro (López), but Trueba’s sons have sworn to avenge the murder of their father. The feature debut of legendary director Arturo Ripstein, TIME TO DIE represents one of the earliest examples of New Mexican Cinema and one of the most accomplished Mexican films from the 1960s.

“A beguiling picture…simply told and elegantly shot.” – Carolina A. Miranda, Los Angeles Times

“‘Time to Die’ turns the showdown narrative of so many oaters into an actively intelligent, darkly funny and no less suspenseful rumination on the pull of the horizon versus the ill wind at the back.” – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times

“It’s a swift slow burn of a film, the story of a man who once got pushed too far with terrible results now getting pushed too far again, with results that are, as the title suggests, sure to be worse.” – Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice

Dear Brattle Friends,

You guys continue to humble and amaze us with your outpouring of support!

Thanks to you, we have now raised more than $35,000 from over 400 individual donors!

Thank you for helping to keep our staff paid and The Brattle alive during this scary time.

I hope that you are all feeling healthy.

As we remain closed, our preliminary goal is to raise four weeks of operating support, or $65,000, to ensure we can continue to pay all of our staff, and other overhead through April 7. As things develop, our timeline for being closed and fundraising goal may change, but our ultimate goal of re-opening The Brattle stays firm.

With your help, this goal will become a reality.

Stay healthy,

Ivy, Ned & The Brattle Theatre Team
