(1995) dir Joel & Ethan Coen w/Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare, John Carroll Lynch [98 min; DCP]
Though not Deakins’ first Oscar nomination (that was for The Shawshank Redemption 2 years earlier) nor his first collaboration with the Coen Brothers (that would be Barton Fink), FARGO is undoubtedly the Coens’ first masterpiece and a sneaky testament to Deakins’ skill. In this snowy, neo-noir tale of small-town greed and murder, visual flair apparently takes a backseat to quirky characters… but that doesn’t mean it’s not present. Consider the opening shot: a field of white that slowly becomes apparent that it’s not just a blank screen when a lone bird flies into view.
