(1988) dir Claire Denis w/Isaach De Bankole, Cécile Ducasse, Giulia Boschi, François Cluzet [105 min; 35mm]
The great French auteur Claire Denis’ films were a fixture in the BIFWC, she herself visited the festival in 1995, and the first festival in 1993 featured a revival screening of this, her debut feature. Partly based on her own childhood in colonial Africa, CHOCOLAT tells the story of an African servant in a French family’s house in French Cameroon – seen through the eyes of the young girl in the family.

★★★★ “‘Chocolat’ is a film of infinite delicacy.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Chocolat is a semi-autobiographical film that functions as a political allegory examining gender, age and colonial relationships.” – Diana Sanders, Sense of Cinema

Chocolat is that rarest of pleasures: a debut picture that clearly announces the arrival of a singular sensibility.” – Elbert Ventura, Reverse Shot
