Maureen Foley in Person!

(1997) dir Maureen Foley w/ Stephanie Castellarin, Katharine Ross, Patricia Kalember, Brian Delate [110 min; tbd]
Set in 1963, HOME BEFORE DARK tells the story of Nora James (Casterllarin) an eleven year-old with the usual concerns – lipstick, first crushes, school work – and a crushing family tragedy. When the assassination of JFK sends her parents over the edge, Nora is sent to live with her aunt where she starts to understand what she wants from life. Writer/director Maureen Foley’s film is full of life, rich with period details, and features standout performances from the young Castallarin and Katharine Ross (The Graduate) as the fragile Aunt Rose.

“It’s the extraordinary performance that Foley draws from [Stephanie] Castellarin that gives the film its vital center…For all its finesse and emotional veracity, Home Before Dark is above all generous as it revisits some keenly felt personal history and ties together its loose ends with love and empathy.” – Jay Carr, The Boston Globe
