The Technoskeptic Goes to the Movies!

Screening will be followed by discussion with The Technoskeptic’s Mo Lotman and Professors Sasha Rush and Sharon Lamb

(2013) dir Spike Jonze w/Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, Amy Adams [126 min; 35mm]
Undoubtedly the most benign A.I. in this trio of films, the love interest in HER is actually a next-gen, Siri-like assistant named Samantha. Samantha (Johansson) is a self-aware operating system that lonely professional letter writer Theodore (Phoenix) installs on his phone – and starts a romantic relationship with. Join The Technoskeptic and the Brattle for a screening of the film followed by a discussion about the reality of the science behind it.

Sasha Rush is a Computer Science Professor at Harvard, studying natural language processing.

Sharon Lamb is a Professor of Psychology at UMass Boston, studying media stereotypes, sexuality, and attachment.

The Technoskeptic

“A keeper of a film, quietly dazzling.” – Cath Clarke, Time Out

“A remarkably ingenious film but, more important, it is a film that transcends its own ingenuity to achieve something akin to wisdom.” – Christopher Orr, The Atlantic

“You’ve heard of fables for our time? ‘Her’ is a fable for the near future.” – Ty Burr, Boston Globe

“Filmed with a bright crispness that speaks of a nostalgia for the future, “Her” is a touching, buoyant pleasure.” – Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times
