(1947) dir Orson Welles w/Rita Hayworth, Orson Welles, Everett Sloane, Glenn Anders [87 min; 35mm]
This summer we celebrate the 100th birthday of one of cinema’s most iconic beauties, Rita Hayworth. THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI was made during the peak of her career with her then husband, Orson Welles, just as their marriage was collapsing. Nonetheless, it remains one of her most indelible features with Hayworth as a femme fatale who enchants Welles’ Michael O’Hara and draws him into a mirrored maze of cross firing plots and deceit.

Staff Pick: Dave

“A magnificent mess of switchbacks and revelations, climaxing with one of cinema’s most outrageously inventive sequences.” – Tom Huddleston, Time Out

“The climax, a shootout in a funhouse hall of mirrors, is one of the bravura sequences in all film, a triumph of hey-look-at-me form over just-the-facts content.” – Mark Feeney, Boston Globe

“Welles and Hayworth were married at the time; he gives her closeups of unmatched rapture even while allegorizing his own fate as a free spirit caught in the trap of Hollywood’s delusional pleasure dome.” – Richard Brody, New Yorker
