Double Feature with BARFLY (7:15)
(2002) dir Michael Winterbottom w/Steve Coogan, John Thomson, Paul Popplewell, Lennie James, Shirley Henderson, Paddy Considine, Ron Cook, John Simm, Danny Cunningham, Andy Serkis, Sean Harris, Mark E. Smith [117 min; 35mm]
Unlike BARFLY, everything in 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE seems awash in color. Steve Coogan plays the pathologically irrepressible Tony Wilson: journalist, alt-rock mogul, nightclub impresario, hustler, dreamer, and consummate self-aggrandizer. Wilson, along with a cadre of insanely creative (and sometimes just insane) artists and musicians, was partly responsible for bringing acts like Joy Division, New Order, A Certain Ratio, and The Happy Mondays to the attention of the world in the 1980s and ‘90s.
“This is Cult Movie Central — and there’s no livelier tour guide than Michael Winterbottom.” – Tim Merrill, Film Threat
“Great good fun even if you spent the 1980s listening to Loverboy.” – Ty Burr, Boston Globe
“Amazing, rich in authentic period atmosphere and detail, an ever-changing cyclorama of a movie that contains and frames Wilson, who never is allowed to overwhelm it.” – Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times
