Double Features: Screens Friday with BILL & TED’S BOGUS JOURNEY (9:30), and Saturday with THE VIRGIN SPRING (3:15, 7:30)

(1957) dir Ingmar Bergman w/Max von Sydow, Gunnar Björnstrand, Bengt Ekerot [96 min; Fri on 35mm/Sat on DCP]
Disillusioned and exhausted after a decade of battling in the Crusades, a knight (von Sydow) encounters Death on a desolate beach and challenges him to a fateful game of chess. Much studied, imitated, and parodied, but never outdone, Bergman’s stunning allegory of man’s search for meaning, THE SEVENTH SEAL, was one of the benchmark foreign imports of America’s 1950s art-house heyday, pushing cinema’s boundaries and ushering in a new era of moviegoing.

The Brattle’s Boston premiere of THE SEVENTH SEAL in February of 1959 was promoted at the time as the “Greatest Hit in the Brattle’s History!”

Staff Pick: Jessie, Cardinal – saw in a film class centuries ago – BILL AND TED’S BOGUS ADVENTURE only makes sense if you watch this first. Jk?

“Even after half a century, The Seventh Seal is an untarnished gold-standard of artistic and moral seriousness.”
– The Guardian

“This is an uncompromising film, regarding good and evil with the same simplicity and faith as its hero.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

“The Seventh Seal is an existentialist masterpiece packed with stunning symbolism and mordant humour. It’s also far more accessible than you might think. Go see it. Or else.” – David Jenkins, Little White Lies
