Repertory Series ArchiveThe Good Works of Claire Denis (Part 2)

White Material

2009 • dir Claire Denis w/Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Lambert, Isaach De Bankolé, Nicolas Duvauchelle • 106 min • 35mm

Denis teams up with another legend of French cinema for this potent rumination on society turned upside down. An electrifying Isabelle Huppert stars as Maria Vial, a woman running a coffee plantation in an unnamed African country which is descending into civil war. As the conflict closes in on the plantation, she refuses to back down, even as tragedy begins to surround her.

“Burns with a mute fear and rage at the ongoing atrocities in central Africa.”
– J.R. Jones, Chicago Reader

“‘White Material’… isn’t about the calm before the storm but the seconds before the deluge. The sense of imminent violence is remarkably orchestrated by Denis through harsh, sun-baked camerawork and a brooding score.”
– Ty Burr, Boston Globe

“Simultaneously poetic, dramatic and realistic, ‘White Material’ is an altogether stunning work.”
– Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
