The Host

Cambridge Science Festival After Dark

Global Warning

2006 • dir Bong Joon-ho w/Kang-ho Song, Ko Asung, Doona Bae, Hae-il Park, Hee-Bong Byun • 120 min • 35mm

Bong Joon-ho’s remarkable international breakout film is a giant monster film reimagined for the 21st century. One day, a huge toxic-waste-spawned monster emerges from the waters of Seoul’s Han River and causes havoc. Caught in the middle of the incident is slow-witted snack bar operator Gang-du (Song) whose daughter is abducted by the beast for unknown reasons. Much like Gareth Edwards recent remake of Godzilla (2014), Bong allows his film to play out on a human scale, intertwining a surprisingly emotional and poignant family portrait with eco-horror monster mayhem.

Staff Pick: Greg, Cardinal

“The movie pops up out of nowhere, grabs you in its big, messy tentacles, and drags you down into murky depths, where social satire coexists with slapstick, and B-movie clichés mutate into complex metaphors.”
– Dana Stevens, Slate

“Bong still offers a powerful rejoinder to his Hollywood counterparts: Anything you can do, I can do better.”
– Scott Tobias, AV Club

“The Host is a loopy, feverishly imaginative genre hybrid about the demons that haunt us from without and within.”
– Manohla Dargis, New York Times
