20th Anniversary!

Friday, April 19 – Wednesday, April 24

1999 • dir Takashi Miike w/Ryo Ishibashi, Eihi Shiina, Tetsu Sawaki, Jun Kunimura • 115 min • DCP/35mm

Returning to the Brattle in a new digital print for the occasion of its 20th anniversary, we’re thrilled to present Takashi Miike’s masterpiece in all of its transgressive glory. A lonely widower reluctantly agrees to start dating again at the urging of his teenage son and, through a crackpot scheme by a producer friend, meets the beautiful Asami (Shiina). The first half of the film feels like a romantic comedy/drama with Shigeharu falling hard for the alluring woman but, when Asami believes that she has been wronged, a whole new side of her emerges – a ruthless, needle-wielding, masochistic, nightmare side. Need we say, this film is not for the faint of heart.

Friday and Saturday evening screenings on DCP; Wednesday screening from an archival 35mm print.

Staff Pick: Coty, Jessie, Greg: “I will probably regret watching this.”

“A lethally poised Venus flytrap of a movie…the best-disguised psychotronic splatter flick in recent memory.”
– Dennis Lim, Village Voice

“A great, sick rush with a kicker on the level of The Vanishing.”
– Elvis Mitchell, New York Times
