25th Anniversary

Double Feature with THE LEARNING TREE (2:15, 7:00)

1994 • dir Spike Lee w/Zelda Harris, Alfre Woodard, Delroy Lindo, David Patrick Kelly, Carlton Williams, Sharif Rashed, Tse-Mach Washington, Christopher Knowings • 115 min • 35mm

Moving from 1930s Kansas to 1970s Brooklyn, we follow Gordon Parks’ semi-autobiographical film with Spike Lee’s semi-autobiographical memoir about growing up in the NYC borough. Seen mainly through the eyes of a nine-year-old girl named Troy (Harris), the film lays out the family dynamics between Troy, her four brothers, their aspiring musician father (Lindo), and their long-suffering mother (Woodard) during one fateful summer.

Staff Pick: Casey, Jessie, Billy: “Rare gem that still shines 25 years later.”

“Modulating from heavy to light, from angry to lyrical, and so on, the movie’s an enjoyable, emotional symphony.”
– Desson Thomson, Washington Post

“This remarkable movie will haunt you for a good long time.”
– Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
