The Learning Tree

50th Anniversary

Double Feature with CROOKLYN (4:30, 9:15)

1969 • dir Gordon Parks w/Kyle Johnson, Alex Clarke, Estelle Evans, Dana Elcar, Mira Waters, Joel Fluellen, Malcolm Atterbury • 107 min • 35mm

Acclaimed African-American photographer Gordon Parks wrote and directed (and also produced and wrote music for) this adaptation of his own semi-autobiographical novel about growing up black in Kansas. The success of the film led to Parks taking up a career in Hollywood where he helped to create the blaxploitation genre with his hit Shaft in 1971.

Staff Pick: Brandon: “If you’re coming to see CROOKLYN then you owe it to yourself to stick around for THE LEARNING TREE (and don’t miss the Gordon Parks photography exhibit around the corner at the Cooper Gallery).”

“The restraint, the composure, the sufficiency of the sentimental gesture constitute a small gift for memory and a real victory in the first stages of this filmmaker’s career.”
– Roger Greenspun, New York Times
