On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

50th Anniversary

Double Feature with THE ITALIAN JOB (4:00, 9:00)

This outlier in the James Bond series was often overlooked among the sexy, fun Bonds played by Sean Connery and Roger Moore. But now, in the age of Daniel Craig’s more serious portrayal of the legendary spy, ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE seems ready for a rediscovery. The plot is pretty typical Bond stuff with the agent going toe-to-toe with Telly Savalas’ Blofeld – holding the world for ransom yet again! – but the execution, and the surprisingly emotional final scenes, make OHMSS a film to savor.

Staff Pick: Brandon

“It offers supremely satisfying versions of all the conventions we expect from the series … and then it does the one thing you don’t expect a James Bond movie to do: It breaks your heart.”
– Charles Taylor, Salon.com
