Repertory Series ArchiveA Salute to Debra Granik

Stray Dog

Presented by Boston Society of Film Critics

2014 • dir Debra Granik • 98 min • DCP

Granik’s debut documentary is a sensitive, observational film about Ron “Stray Dog” Hall, a motorcycle-riding Vietnam vet with a heart as big as the open road. With his newly wed Mexican wife, Anita, by his side, Stray Dog is doing his best to live his life as openly and positively as he can manage. STRAY DOG is a moving and graceful portrait of a man, a place (rural Missouri), a time, and, in a major way, our country.

NYT Critics’ Pick “Perhaps its greatest virtue lies in its powerful, implicit challenge to the lazy habit of looking at American life through polarized red- and blue-tinted lenses.”
– A. O. Scott, The New York Times

“Stray Dog is often powerfully moving, due to Granik’s intimate access to Hall and his family, and the overwhelming and openly expressed feelings on display.”
– Tasha Robinson, The Dissolve
