Repertory Series ArchiveThe Films of Jim Jarmusch

Broken Flowers

Double Feature with THE LIMITS OF CONTROL (4:30, 9:15)

2005 • dir Jim Jarmusch w/Bill Murray, Jeffrey Wright, Jessica Lange, Sharon Stone, Julie Delpy, Francis Conroy, Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton • 106 min • 35mm

Bill Murray plays Don, an aging womanizer who is tipped off by anonymous letter that he has a son who he has never met. At the urging of his mystery-loving friend Winston (Wright), Don sets out to track down his son. The trouble is he has no idea who sent the letter, whether or not it’s actually true, or which of his previous lovers he might have impregnated.

“Like a perfect, short-lived love affair, its pleasure is accompanied by a palpable sting of sorrow. It leaves you wanting more, which I mean entirely as a compliment.”
– Dana Stevens, New York Times

★★★★ “No actor is better than Bill Murray at doing nothing at all, and being fascinating while not doing it. Buster Keaton had the same gift for contemplating astonishing developments with absolute calm. Buster surrounded himself with slapstick, and in Broken Flowers Jim Jarmusch surrounds Murray with a parade of formidable women.”
– Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
