The Limits of Control

Double Feature with BROKEN FLOWERS (7:00)

2009 • dir Jim Jarmusch w/Isaach De Bankole, Alex Descas, Jean-Francois Stévenin, Paz de la Huerta, John Hurt, Gael García Bernal, Hiam Abbass, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray • 116 min • 35mm

This gorgeous and enigmatic film is (quite possibly) about the struggle between art and commerce. Isaach De Bankolé (Ghost Dog) stars as a mysterious loner on a dreamlike journey to complete a job – perhaps an assassination although his goals are not initially clear. In any case, his activities remain meticulously outside the law. THE LIMITS OF CONTROL teams Jarmusch with legendary cinematographer Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love).

“The visual and the aural are what make this film such a delight to watch, as Mr. Jarmusch is a metafilmmaker who delights in subverting film’s narrative conventions and genre expectations.”
– Kelly Jane Torrance, Washington Times

“It’s bold, confrontational cinema that will, as its author intended, have you questioning at every turn just what it is you expect from a modern movie, and more importantly, why.”
– Kevin Maher, Times (UK)

“A work of dazzling formal discipline that riffs on the simple notion of repetition and variation.”
– David Jenkins, Time Out
