La Dolce Vita

Friday, August 30 – Monday, September 2

1960 • dir Federico Fellini w/Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimée • 174 min • 35mm

Filmmaking titan Federico Fellini was responsible for several true masterpieces in his nearly 50-year career, but this film towers over most his other works. In LA DOLCE VITA, Fellini takes aim at “the sweet life” of Rome’s decadent upper-crust. The debauched antics of the elites inspire both envy and disdain in successful paparazzo Marcello (Mastroianni) as he tools around the city in his convertible Triumph sportscar hunting for his next salacious story.

Kim: ” I love this movie, and Nino Rota’s score, so much.”

“Every time I watch ‘La Dolce Vita,’ I am struck once again by how modern this 59-year-old film feels, maybe not in its costumes or sexual politics but more in its existential malaise and the seductiveness of a vapid celebrity culture gone to seed.”
– Sean Burns, The ARTery

“[Fellini’s] poetic sensibilities are in full effect. There’s also a tremendous soulfulness that roots the movie’s depiction of sin in the soil of introspection.”
– Wesley Morris, Boston Globe

“Rather than wallow in cynicism, Fellini’s genius is characterised by a zest for life — albeit a tragically insatiable one — as he sprinkles dreamlike snapshots like glitter in the darkness.”

“In sum, it is an awesome picture, licentious in content but moral and vastly sophisticated in its attitude and what it says.”
– Bosley Crowther, New York Times
