A Nightmare on Elm Street

THE LATE SHOW

FRI, SEP 13 – MON, SEP 16

1984 • dir Wes Craven w/Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, Johnny Depp, John Saxon, Ronee Blakley • 91 min • 35mm

While we have a great appreciation for the less talkative villains of the slasher world (see our Halloween program), it’s hard to think of a more quintessentially ’80s horror icon than Freddy Krueger. A wise-cracking, undead child molester who lives on in the bad dreams of the neighborhood that he terrified, Freddy is, impossibly, both charismatic and terrifying; absurd and frighteningly real. The success of the character – and his long-lasting impact (see the release of It Chapter 2 this month) – rests firmly on the talents of the man inextricably linked to Freddy, the actor Robert Englund, who embraced the role with abandon.
