Double Feature With TINY: THE LIFE OF ERIN BLACKWELL on Saturday & Sunday

1984 • dir Martin Bell w/Tiny, Rat, DeWayne • 91 min • DCP

Seattle, 1983. Taking their camera to the streets of what was supposedly America’s most livable city, filmmaker Martin Bell, photographer Mary Ellen Mark, and journalist Cheryl McCall set out to tell the stories of those society had left behind: homeless and runaway teenagers living on the city’s margins. Born from a Life Magazine exposé by Mark and McCall, STREETWISE follows an unforgettable group of at-risk children – including iron-willed fourteen-year-old Tiny, who would become the project’s most haunting and enduring face, along with the pugnacious yet resourceful Rat and the affable drifter DeWayne – who, driven from their broken homes, survive by hustling, panhandling, and dumpster diving. Granted remarkable access to their world, the filmmakers craft a devastatingly frank, nonjudgmental portrait of lost youth growing up far too soon in a world that has failed them. – Janus Films

Staff Pick: Rachel, Brandon

Academy Award Nominee, Best Documentary
Winner, Special Jury Prize, Sundance Film Festival

“The ultimate art of STREETWISE is that Bell, Mark, and McCall never assumed it was their story, it was, and is, the children’s film.”
– Michael Blowen, Boston Globe (1985)

“Bell proves uncannily adept at capturing moments that seem to encapsulate a subject’s entire emotional temperature.”
– Chuck Bowen, Slant

“Streetwise is surprising for the frankness of the material it contains. How did the filmmakers get these people to say these things, to allow the cameras into their lives?”
– Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

“For a film about teenagers living rough, squatting in dilapidated and abandoned hotels or homeless on the streets, there is a remarkable amount of poetic beauty in Streetwise.”
– Glenn Dunks, The Film Experience
