Grill Point

2002 • dir Andreas Dresen w/Axel Prahl, Steffi Kühnert, Thorsten Merten, Gabriela Maria Schmeide • 106 min • 35mm

Though little known in the U.S., Andreas Dresen is one of the most respected filmmakers in contemporary German cinema. Born and raised in the former German Democratic Republic, Dresen frequently portrays small-town, regular life in post-unification Germany, gaining him a reputation as a sort of East German Mike Leigh.

In this relationship dramedy, an affair between two married friends is uncovered and both couples involved must reflect on life, love, and friendship. GRILL POINT was one of Dresen’s earliest breakout films and an award winner at the Berlin Film Festival as well as the German Film Awards.

“Often compared to the Danish provocateur Lars von Trier and the British social realist Ken Loach, Mr. Dresen gives realism a resonant spin: his movies detonate with the small surprises life springs on us all.”
– Karen Durbin, New York Times

“Intimate, tightly focussed… it’s a warm, sad and funny portrait of ordinary people with a touch of Mike Leigh.”
– Sheila Johnston, Screen Daily
