Risky Business

1983 • dir Paul Brickman w/Tom Cruise, Rebecca De Mornay, Joe Pantoliano, Curtis Armstrong, Richard Masur, Bronson Pinchot • 99 min • DCP

A privileged suburban teenager (Cruise) cuts loose while his parents are on vacation and ends up starting a relationship with a call girl that leads his life in unexpected directions. A seminal teen comedy of the 1980’s and one of Tom Cruise’s earliest breakout roles, RISKY BUSINESS appears to be an un-ironic paean to yuppie aspirations but the neo-noir style and the originally-intended down-beat ending belie a more complicated picture.
