Ishtar

Double Feature with WALKER (5:00, 9:15)

1987 • dir Elaine May w/Warren Beatty, Dustin Hoffman, Isabelle Adjani, Charles Grodin • 107 min • DCP

Though widely derided as one of the biggest cinematic misfires of the ‘80s, Elaine May’s ISHTAR has begun to be reassessed in recent years – perhaps it was just to sharp a satire for audiences at the time. Released just 10 days into the Iran-Contra hearings, this homage to the Road to… films of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope crossed with a left-wing critique of Reagan-era policies stars Beatty and Hoffman as a pair of witless American entertainers who find themselves embroiled in a conflict between North African rebels and the CIA.
