HOLLYWOOD WHODUNNITS
1934 • dir W.S. Van Dyke w/William Powell, Myrna Loy, Maureen O’Sullivan, Minna Gombell, Porter Hall, Henry Wadsworth, William Henry • 91 min • 35mm
Retired detective Nick (Powell) is determined to lead a life of leisure as the kept man of his newly acquired society wife (Loy) but people keep thinking he’s still on the job. Ironically, the work of THE THIN MAN author Dashiell Hammett, along with his contemporary Raymond Chandler, helped to (temporarily) kill off the cultured silver screen detectives with the popularity of their hardboiled film noir style.
