The Last of Sheila

1973 • dir Herbert Ross w/Richard Benjamin, Dyan Cannon, James Coburn, Joan Hackett, James Mason, Ian McShane, Raquel Welch • 120 min • 35mm

In this unique ‘70s curiosity, James Coburn plays a rich, widowed producer who gathers a group of ‘friends’ for a Mediterranean cruise and insists that they participate in what appears to be an innocent game – but really is a plot to uncover the person responsible for his wife’s death. Co-written by mystery-loving Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins, THE LAST OF SHEILA is a delightful and surprising gem that has been largely overlooked since its release.

“It’s a very clever movie. The 1970s churned out a lot of these all-star whodunnits – Murder on the Orient Express, Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe, Deathtrap… even to the point of parody: Neil Simon’s Murder by Death. The Last of Sheila is the best of the bunch by far.” – Screenwriter Larry Karaszewski
