The Boy with Green Hair

Introduction by Film Critic Gerald Peary!

1948 • dir Joseph Losey w/Dean Stockwell, Pat O’Brien, Robert Ryan, Barbara Hale • 82 min • 35mm

A young war orphan (Stockwell) arrives in a small town and begins to find a normal life under the care of a retired vaudeville actor (O’Brien). When the boy discovers the truth about his past, however, his hair mysteriously turns green – and throws the town into an uproar. An unexpected anti-war parable disguised as a children’s fantasy film, THE BOY WITH GREEN HAIR is a fascinating and oft-overlooked film.

“Few films so daringly span the local and the universal—or look so ravishing while doing so. Its eerie palette meshes perfectly with Losey’s vision of a world out of joint.”
– Richard Brody, New Yorker
